Under the invitation of Science Centre, The J Babies had a preview of the latest exhibition at Science Centre – Earth: Our Untamed Planet. This exhibition will commence from TODAY (1 Mar) onwards, and visitors can expect to see a one-of-its-kind presentation on the Earth that we live in. Before I went for the exhibition, I was a little apprehensive that my kids would not be that interested in a topic that’s seemingly very scientific & abstract. But because of the way the exhibition was structured, with its many interactive and fun elements, the kids had a great time. =)
You enter the exhibition by going through a ‘crack’ in the Earth.
The exhibition is categorised into different sections for hurricanes, earthquakes, tsunamis, volcanoes etc. I remembered as a teenager, I was very interested in such topics when I studied about them in geography. Perhaps it’s because in Singapore, we are blessed to be positioned in such a way that we are shielded from many of these natural disasters, that made them all the more mysteriously interesting to me. So, not only the kids, but I had a great time at the exhibition as well. =)
This is Kim, the content person for the exhibition, explaining to us the tsunami simulator. With a push of a button, you can cause the simulator to demonstrate how different effects of the tsunami can cause different extents of damage to the houses on land.
This station can demonstrate how a volcano eruption can occur, and you can also play a game which allows you to decode the co-ordinates that will indicate an impending eruption.
Check out this cool Earth that seems like it’s hanging in mid air. =)
This jigsaw puzzle game lets you try to piece the different segments together to form a large piece of land. It’s to demonstrate how plate movements cause land positioning to change over time.
The highlight of the exhibition has got to be the typhoon simulator. Baby Jayne played in it over and over again – She was fearless! =D You put on the ear muffs, enter the container and close the door, press a button and a strong wind will blow up. It can go over 100km/hr, and it was really strong! I tried it too!!
What I like about the exhibition is the special effort put in to the content design. Because of the fact that Singapore does not experience any of the natural disasters described in the exhibition, the content designers tried their best to draw a link between the different disasters to Singapore so that Singaporeans can see the relevance. For example, in the Earthquake section (I didn’t manage to get a photo!), there is an Earthquake simulator which looks like a living room in a typical house. You can step into it, and choose different options to simulate different kinds of shakes and quakes. One of the options will simulate an earthquake feeling you will get if you are in a high-rise HDB flat. The movements you would experience is slightly different from what you would face if you were in a landed property. Pretty interesting isn’t it? I’d say it’s a very sincere exhibition put together by Science Centre, and definitely worth visiting.
Earth: Our Untamed Planet is a permanent exhibition at The Science Centre. Only usual entrance fees to Science Centre apply. The exhibition will commence from today, 1 Mar onwards.
