Will She Love Her Always?

I have been very blessed to have a good elder daughter who welcomed her little sister into the family readily and with great enthusiasm. I know of others who had lot of sibling rivalries to deal with and I was glad I didn’t have any of those.

Joey loves her little sister, always kisses and hugs her, and lovingly calls Baby Jayne her ‘baby’.

Sometimes her love may be a little ‘overpowering’, but..

29Dec 019

…I think Baby Jayne secretly likes it. =P

I have always been careful around Joey and Jayne, and if anyone is paying attention or playing with Jayne, I will try to engage Joey as well so that she doesn’t feel that everyone’s focusing on Jayne only.

Today was the first time I detected some weird expressions on her face. I was bringing my two kids down the stairs to meet my dad who came to pick us up for dinner. Joey, as usual, was very excited to see Grandpa, and kept chanting, ‘Gong Gong! Gong Gong!’, but my dad’s first words were, ‘Hello Yixin (Jayne’s chinese name)!’ I could almost sense Joey’s bewilderment. At that moment, I felt really sorry for her. Before Baby Jayne came along, she was the only one who’s got attention lavished upon!

I do understand that babies naturally attract more attention and most people like to play with the babies and make them smile, but I definitely don’t want my Joey’s confidence to be hurt because of that. Thank God my dad turned his attention to Joey immediately after that, and carried her all the way to the car. It soothed the situation somewhat.

It kind of rang an alarm in my head. From the beginning till now, things seemed to be going well between the sisters. Even though I had feared that Joey will feel the loss as the only kid in the family, she has been responding surprisingly well. But that doesn’t mean I can relax and take things for granted. Kids’ ego and emotions are weak and easily bruised and hurt. If I am not careful, my kids may be hurt without me knowing it and that’s definitely not what I want.

While I know I cannot control people’s reactions to Jayne in front of Joey, I can only keep instilling in her the fact that Jayne is her sister and she is to love and take care of her forever. So far, this tactic has worked perfectly because Joey is a born leader who feels a need to take care of everyone around her, and because she is an elder sister, she is responsible for her little sister. Plus, it really helps that Joey is very fond of Jayne.

My wish is that the two sisters will continue to love and cherish each other, grow up enjoying each other’s companionship and eventually stay as best of friends. And my prayer is that sibling rivalry will never be an issue, and even as they are growing up, I will be a good mum who does not make either one of them feel that I have a favorite between them. In my eyes, they are both precious and special.

The Baby Crawls (And Eats Dirt)

It’s really not easy being a parent, I assure you.

If you take extreme meticulous care of them, people say you are over protective and ought to allow more room for the children to discover and learn from their mistakes. But if you just relax and let them do whatever they want, you are deemed as a reckless and careless parent. I am however, more on the relaxed side, and firmly believes that eating dirt does not do that much harm to my  kids. Two very classic examples coming up:

Ahem.

I mean, you can hardly blame her, can you? BOTH the toe AND the floor look delicious enough.

SONY DSC

This is of course not the flooring in my house. I don’t choose just any flooring for my baby to crawl and eat dirt on. This house’s got a maid and she looks honest enough to have done her household chores that day.

Now that she can pivot on her stomach and caterpillar crawl a little, I am always tempted to let her roam freely on the floor. I try to put myself into her shoes and I conclude that it would be really fun to be able to do that.

The legendary caterpillar crawl (Read: buttocks up, legs push, body moves forward. Repeat action.)

It’s easy to get her to demonstrate the legendary caterpillar crawl. Just put an object of interest to her a distance in front.

That’s what happens when you have a photographer friend. Your kids get a free professional photo shoot every time we are hanging out together. Haha! I’m so blessed! =D Love all those shots!

The grand plan was that I would somehow make Isaiah enter the restaurant at approximately 7pm, after all the friends have arrived by 6.30pm. The moment he walks in, Tristan will start playing the keyboard, Gerald will play the guitar and everyone else will sing the Happy Birthday song. The plan went perfectly well [well, almost].

In the afternoon of the same day, we had our CG thanksgiving, and I dragged Isaiah out for shopping after that. He was so tired by 6pm that he said he wanted to go home!! (sweat)

So Serene & I had to conjure up a silly excuse that we needed to check out some corporate rates for the Singapore Flyer, and I insisted that we should take dinner there before we go home. Isaiah very reluctantly agreed to go. When we reached the Singapore Flyer, I said I wanted to check out the Christian pub there for my zone’s thanksgiving event. Initially, Isaiah wanted to wait outside the pub!

Thank God in the end, he decided to step in together with us, and …

The perfect team!!

Great to have friends who are musically inclined and helped to pull off such a plan! Haha!

It’s Papa’s Birthday!

Isaiah’s birthday falls on 31 Dec every year, and this year, I thought it’ll be a neat idea to surprise him with a mini party! Now, my husband has always been the one planning surprises for me, but this is a first for me!

Planning started 2 months ago…

Picture1

I have to say I have sporting friends who immediately blocked out the special date – 26 Dec, for the party and everyone asked how they could help. As I would be busy distracting Isaiah on the actual day and orchestrating for him to arrive at the venue at the exact time, I had to appoint a Chief Logistics Officer to help manage things for me. And Tristan Lin Weiyang was the chosen one.

Picture3

There were many apprehensions of course, like how we would be able to make Isaiah go to the venue at the stated time etc. But I say that’s what makes life exciting.

Picture2

After deciding between several venues, I finally settled for the Love The World Christian Pub at the Singapore Flyer!

26Dec 042

The pub has a stage area with instruments, and Joey had a go at the drums!

26Dec 040

The live band came on at 9pm and we enjoyed some nice renditions of English pop and gospel songs!

I corresponded with the pub and they offered me a special package that consisted of soup, main course, coffee/tea and birthday cake for my guests. The food was so-so, but the company was great as always.

26Dec 010  26Dec 030 26Dec 031 26Dec 032  I hope it was a fun night of fellowship for dear hubby and that he had fun! :)

Peter is the appointed photographer of the day, and once the photos come in, I’ll blog about the night of celebration again in detail, I promise!
