One of the best things about touring in Hong Kong is that you can find food practically everywhere you go. I especially love the street food culture - Everything's so colourful and in so many varieties, it's awesome. It is a totally different experience from having holidays in places like Australia, where all the shops are closed by 5pm everyday. In Hong Kong, you can find food easily after 12 midnight. It is a city that doesn't sleep. This is a food-picture-heavy post: You should probably skip it if you are feeling famished at the moment.
STREET FOOD
There are many shops selling herbal drinks along the streets, and we stopped by a few shops to have some during our stay.
Baby Jayne is an unusual kid who enjoys having herbal drinks. :) They taste pretty good actually, and at some shops, they will even give you a sweet to take after the herbal drink.
Amazingly cheap tea leaves eggs. Less than $2 for 4 eggs!
Another favourite street food of ours was the curry fishballs. We especially love the really spicy ones from this shop near our hotel at Mongkok area that we went back 4 to 5 times! The fishballs were not soggy and very springly. They also serve piping hot tau pok in yummy sauce, which was a real treat in the cold weather.
We also had other stuffs like egg tarts, soya beancurd, etc. Eating on-the-go is such a wonderful thing.
Apart from the yummy street food, we also ate at many restaurants in Hong Kong, many of which are recommended by friends. Seriously, everything was super yummy.
HONG KONG CAFES (茶餐廳)
We had breakfasts and some of our other meals at the typical HK cafes. Food was good and affordable. We had curry fishball noodles, 車仔面 maggie noodles with luncheon meat, beef noodles, etc. Of course, we had iced milk tea all the time.
Almost all cafes are crammed and very crowded. Land is very scarce and precious in Hong Kong, so everything must maximize space utilisation.
Had dinner one of the days at a Macau restaurant. Forgot to take note of the name of the restaurant, but the beef stew was really superb.
Tried this extremely yummy wanton noodles called Mak's noodles (Wellington Street). Pretty pricey for such a small bowl, but every mouthful was so flavourful and yummy! My BFF who tried their beef noodles said it was super delicious too.
The prawns inside the wanton were soooooo fresh & juicy! Noodles were very chewy too.
BREAKFASTS
In Hong Kong, don't bother to book hotel rooms that come with complimentary breakfasts. You'll be better off going onto the streets to have them. Check out our hearty breakfasts!
This value breakfast set costs only HK24 (You get one set of toast, eggs, ham and a bowl of soup noodles, plus a drink).
ROASTED MEATS
Yet another famous shop we went to is this one Keung Kee Restaurant (G/F, Siu Fung Building, 9-17 Tin Lok Lane, Wan Chai). Their roasted meats got our thumbs-up!!
Very yummy double-boiled soups to go with our meal.
This next shop was strongly recommended by friend travelling with us. He tried this on his last few trips to Hong Kong. Apart from the delicious roasted meats, what added points was the salted egg!
昭隆燒味茶餐廳 (G/F, 17 Chiu Lung Street, Central)
I didn't use to be a fan of roasted pork until I tried some really yummy ones in Singapore. These totally beat Singapore's version anytime.
That wraps up my gastronomical experience in Hong Kong! It is indeed a food paradise! =)
