September School Holidays Idea: Barbie™ LIVE Musical

Media Invite

If you have girls, this might be something you can consider bringing them to this September school holidays. My girls are die-hard fans of Barbie - both in doll and DVD form. Between the two of them, they have many Barbie dolls, and have watched most of the Barbie DVD series. When I told them we were going to the Barbie LIVE! Musical media preview, they were practically in hysteria.

The girls love Barbie's DVD cartoon series, but I was not sure if they would enjoy the 'live' version of it. So I thought the preview would be a good gauge of their interest. At the preview, we watched a few scenes from the musical itself, and before we walked out of the preview, the kids were already bugging me to bring them to the actual performance. I guess that basically said it all.

Barbie™ LIVE Musical will have its world premiere in Singapore (how privileged to be among the first to catch the performance in the world!) for one week only from today, 10 September till 14 September, at the MasterCard Theatres at Marina Bay Sands. This all-new musical is an engaging show featuring contemporary music with empowering lyrics, energetic choreography and a modern storyline that will appeal to fans of all ages. The whole musical is performed by a talented cast of 19 singers and dancers, and going by the standard of music and songs in the various Barbie DVD series that captivated the hearts of so many kids (including mine), I am sure this musical would be a hit. The musical also includes some 'flashbacks' to certain scenes from the popular Barbie DVD series such as Princess and the Popstar, Swan Lake, etc, so if you or your kids have watched them before, you would be able to sing and dance along to the familiar tunes during the musical itself!

Sharing some shots from the preview - I'm sure you can tell the whole show's packed with spectacular lighting, dazzling costumes and a really fabulous stage setting!

Joey was excited that she could recognise the characters such as Barbie, Ken and Raquelle (Barbie's all-time foe). I was pretty amazed she could too. :P

There was lots of singing and dancing throughout the shows, and that was exactly what the producers and creative directors were going for, as we were told at the media preview. It was supposed to be a performance packed with so much entertainment that the audience hardly have time to slow down. I love how colourful and vibrant the whole performance was!

It was no mean feat for these performers who sang 'live' (yes, not pre-recorded!) and dance at the same time, while watching their movements and expressions. But the cast did it so well.

I really like the catchy tunes and great original compositions - they add so much life to the show itself.

One of the reasons why my kids and I really like the Barbie DVD series is because of the many positive messages conveyed. Even though the storylines may be different, Barbie is always motivating her friends to conquer their fears, trust in their own abilities and soar high. In the musical, you can also see the same positive messages being conveyed - Believe in yourself, and embrace friendships! With the amount of trashy TV programmes out there in the market right now, such shows with positive values are very welcomed indeed!

I also enjoyed watching all the dancing - such energy and great choreography! Definitely a feast for the senses. :)

We had a fun girly date at the preview, Haha!
