The Breast Question

And so the other day when Jayne and I were waiting for our dinner at the zi char stall when she suddenly turned to me, pointed at my chest and asked, "Mummy, what are these?" As a matter-of-factly, I told her, 'They are breasts.' Erm, I mean there's really no point in hiding right? And I am against giving weird and bizarre names to body parts just so that we can say it out without blushing.

The next three minutes of our conversation circled around why I have breasts and she doesn't, to which I replied that only adults have them, and as she grows older and older, just as she will grow taller and taller, the breasts will grow bigger and bigger as well. I couldn't quite explain why only women have breasts and men don't, except that it's just how we are created. I contemplated going into explanations of how mothers need to breastfeed their babies but I thought the mental image might be a little too much for her to take. It was all very factual until she threw me her last question, rather thoughtfully,

"Yours won't get bigger already, right?"

I thought lightning flashed before my eyes at that instance. And was that a look of disdain on her face?!

I could have replied with a sad 'yes' and burst out into tears there and then, but of course I didn't. I do have an image to maintain. The truth was I felt like laughing out loud! Nobody has ever asked me that question before and it was funny that my kid doesn't even think it was funny! I eventually did reply her with an ingenuous answer that goes along the lines of breasts are the same as height - It will keep growing until a certain age, then it will stop. Good answer, IKR. For now, I totally know what she thinks of my breasts, thankyouverymuch.

I foresee many more such awkward questions in the days ahead of us. God bless me.
